AST believes that education does not end with classroom instruction. Giving students the opportunity to work with teachers and fellow classmates outside of the academic area creates lasting friendships as well as memorable life experiences. Some of the activities offered are:
Headmaster's Hike
Every year, on the first of second weekend of the new school year, the Headmaster leads the Faculty and High School students on the long and strenuous journey that begins at the school and ends at the Cape Spartel lighthouse. The Headmaster's hike is an unforgettable experience and an exciting way to start the school year.
Drama
The Dramatic Society, first organized by students in 1964, produces a theatrical presentation for the end of each school year as part of graduation ceremonies. These presentations are open to both the AST community and the public of Tangier as well. Some pictures of The Glass Menagerie or The Tempest.
Past productions include: Electra, Antigone, the Bacchae, Oedipus Rex, Waiting for Godot, Glass Menagerie, Twelfth Night, The Zoo Story, and many others.
Al Tanjaoui
Al Tanjaoui is the school's literary magazine. The magazine includes stories, essays and poems by students of all grade levels in English and French.
Tangier's cultural experience
AST is very fortunate to be able to participate in the active and varied cultural life of Tangier.
Some examples are:
On-going concerts, lectures and exihibitions at both La Mission Culturelle Francaise and Centro Cultural Español, and many Art Galeries; annual theater, jazz and film festivals hosted by the city of Tangier; informal evening presentations at the school with writers, poets, painters and other professionals who reside in Tangier as well as musical recitals by visiting groups.
Community Service and Awareness
Students are encouraged to do community work for various non-governmental organizations. The school also sponsors group expeditions into the surrounding countryside to encourage student confidence and initiative when facing a new and unfamiliar environment. Additionally, students get to experience the wonders and challenges of the natural world and the ancient Berber culture of the Moroccan countryside.
