The American School of Tangier was founded in 1950 to serve the educational needs of American families in the community. From a three-classroom elementary school, it gradually developed into a complete program from Pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 for all nationalities. In 1962, the school moved to its present location. Located adjacent to the Spanish Consulate, the campus is 6.5 hectares (15 acres) and includes a gymnasium and 25-meter outdoor pool, which was completed in 2004. The current enrollment is approximately 320 with a majority of Moroccan students and includes American, Spanish, French, Danish, Dutch, German, Indian, British, Italian, and Latin American nationals. Tangier is located on the northwestern tip of Africa and is within sight of southern Spain and Gibraltar. Tangier, an ancient city at the western edge of the Muslim world, underwent a unique experience of international rule for over half of the twentieth century. Today the city remains vibrantly cosmopolitan. The people of Tangier have traditionally accepted a mixture of backgrounds and beliefs in a spirit of tolerance. A short distance from the bustling city center, there are many serene beaches extending along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts with views of majestic mountains. |
